Nikolas Papadopoulos

President, Democratic Party of Cyprus, DHKO

Nikolas Papadopoulos was born in Nicosia on 22 April 1973. He studied Law (LLB, Barrister-at-Law) at University College London, part of the University of London. During his studies, he developed active political and student union involvement and served as President of the National Federation of Cypriot Students in the United Kingdom (EFEC). After returning to Cyprus, he began working as a lawyer at the law firm Tassos Papadopoulos & Associates Law Office, which was founded by his father, Tassos Papadopoulos, former President of the Republic of Cyprus. At the same time, he became actively involved in political and party affairs, initially serving as Organizational Secretary of NEDIK (Youth Organization of the Democratic Party (DIKO)) in Nicosia, and later as a member of the Executive Bureau of the Democratic Party. In the 2006 parliamentary elections, he was elected Member of Parliament for Nicosia for the first time with the Democratic Party. He was re-elected in the 2011 parliamentary elections—receiving the highest number of preference votes—and again in the 2016 parliamentary elections as head of the party’s electoral list. As a Member of Parliament, he has been actively involved in political affairs across multiple sectors and has also served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Budget. In March 2009, he was elected Vice President of the Democratic Party and was responsible for the party’s economic policy sector and its respective study groups. On 1 December 2013, he was elected President of the Democratic Party, a position to which he was re-elected unopposed in 2018. In this capacity, he is also a member of the National Council of Cyprus. He ceased practicing law in 2014, having previously withdrawn from the law firm Tassos Papadopoulos & Associates Law Office. In the 2018 presidential election, he ran as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic and received 26% of the vote. He is married to Giota Kyprianidou, and they have four children: Elena, Michelle, Anastasia, and Tassos.
